St. Charles, Missouri, has been named one of the safest midsized cities in America, according to a new 2026 study from SmartAsset.

The personal finance company ranked St. Charles No. 13 on its list of America’s Safest Midsize Cities, placing the community among the top 20 midsized cities in the nation for safety. SmartAsset evaluated more than 300 cities with populations between 65,000 and 250,000, using factors that included violent crime, property crime, traffic fatality rates and natural disaster risk.

According to the study, St. Charles reported 1.34 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, 8.87 property crimes per 1,000 residents, 8.09 auto fatalities per 100,000 residents, and a relatively moderate disaster risk rating.

“This recognition reinforces what so many of us already know — St. Charles is an exceptional place to live, work, visit and do business,” said Scott Tate, President & CEO of the St. Charles Regional Chamber. “Public safety and quality of life are major factors in economic growth. When families feel safe, businesses have confidence to invest, and visitors enjoy a welcoming community, everyone benefits. This ranking is a reflection of the hard work of our local public safety professionals, city leaders, businesses and residents who help make St. Charles such a strong and vibrant community.”

The Chamber said the recognition adds to the region’s growing reputation as a desirable destination for families, employers, entrepreneurs and visitors. With its historic charm, strong business community, quality amenities and commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment, St. Charles continues to stand out both locally and nationally.

SmartAsset’s 2026 study was updated May 19, 2026, and used data from sources including the FBI, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, FEMA and the U.S. Census Bureau.
