Free Seminar Video Explains Website Accessibility for Small Businesses and Missouri’s New Safe Harbor Law
ST. LOUIS, October 16, 2026 – Danna McKitrick, P.C. is offering a recording of its seminar on website accessibility, free to chamber members and the wider business community. The session features attorney Sarah Ayers, a transactional lawyer at the firm who advises small businesses, and runs about 27 minutes.
Website accessibility claims have become a real risk for small businesses in Missouri. Over the past three years, demand letters have increased in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas, with e-commerce sites, restaurants, and nonprofits among the most frequent targets. Missouri ranked sixth in the nation for these filings in 2025. In so-called “sue-and-settle” cases, the letter offers to drop the claim for a settlement payment.
In May 2026, Missouri enacted the Act Against Abusive Websites or Web Content Access Litigation. Under the law, a business has 90 days after receiving notice, whether a letter or a lawsuit, to fix the problem, as long as it takes substantial good faith steps in that time. The law also allows the Missouri Attorney General to pursue attorneys and firms that file abusive claims.
“The safe harbor has really changed the tone of these presentations,” Ayers noted during her presentation. “It used to be a lot more scary. Now it’s a big anxiety relief.”
The seminar explains why the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to websites, how courts use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to judge compliance, and what the A, AA, and AAA conformance levels mean. Ayers also walks through the problems that come up most often: low color contrast, missing alt text, inaccessible PDFs, poor keyboard navigation, and links that only say “click here.” She explains what to do if you receive a demand letter, what to ask your web developer, and why some accessibility widgets can make a site worse.
“Accessibility is a legal requirement, but it is also a smart business strategy,” Ayers added. “It helps lower your litigation risk and the risk of getting a sue-and-settle demand, while also expanding your potential customer base.”
More than one in four U.S. adults has a disability, and the share is 43.9% for adults over 65, so accessibility affects customers as well as legal exposure. Questions from the audience also covered Shopify, Square, and Wix, and who is responsible when a website platform only handles part of the job.
